3 Things You MUST Know Before Flying Spirit Airlines: Read This Before Flying With Spirit

Each time Spirit Airlines comes up in conversation I see a lot of people spreading misinformation. So, today I want to debunk a few myths and let you guys know the truth about Spirit Airlines, their bags (baggage fees/carry on bags) and their fees. Do not fly with Spirit Airlines without reading this.

The Truth About Flying Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is very upfront with all of their services, policies, and fees, so when I hear someone say they hate Spirit Airlines or Spirit is terrible I find myself a little perplexed..How could you hate an airline that gets you from point A to point B for less than half the price of other airlines?! No other airline is as upfront as Spirit Airlines. Not only do they offer GREAT (I literally flew to Fort Lauderdale last month for only 17$ each way, find out how here) prices almost daily, but they also are very clear and concise about everything they don’t offer. Here are a few things you should know before you book your next flight with Spirit Airlines

Myth Number 1: You have to pay for a seat when flying Spirit Airlines

This cannot be anymore FALSE!!! You do not HAVE to pay for a seat when flying with Spirit, but you do have the OPTION to pay for (aka reserve) a seat in advance. If you don’t pay for a seat they will assign you to a random seat at check in. Most people don’t like the thought of this because they fear they will get split up if they’re in a group.  Good news, I do this often and I have never been separated from my party.

Myth Number 2: You have to pay for ALL bags when flying Spirit Airlines

NOT TRUE!! I have flown with Spirit Airlines more times than I can count and I have never paid for a bag. Spirit Airlines baggage requirements state that you can bring 1 personal item on board and it IS FREE, but it must fit under the seat in front of you! I like to use this style bag because it fits under the seat but also fits all of my stuff. What’s a personal item you ask? A personal item can be a purse, laptop bag, small backpack etc. Like I said earlier, I personally choose to travel with my Vera Bradley Weekender Bag. It fits all of my belongings and most importantly it fits under the seat in front of me.

Now, if you absolutely have to check a bag or bring a carry on that is larger than a personal item PAY FOR IT IN ADVANCE like at the time of booking. If you choose to add a carry on bag during booking it will cost you $35 (or $30 for checked baggage), but adding a bag after that will cost you 45$ (or 40$ for checked baggage). If you wait until you’re about to board, Adding a bag at the gate will cost you 100$. This also applies to personal items that are too big to fit under the seat. If you arrive at the gate with an oversized personal item you will be charged 100$. So buy your bags in advance if you must bring a bag. Otherwise, stick to the FREE personal item that spirit airlines allows!

Myth Number 3: You have to pay 10$ to print your boarding pass when flying Spirit Airlines

This can be true..but you CAN avoid this unnecessary 10$ charge by printing your boarding pass at home when you check in for your flight. There are also self service kiosks at the airport near the Spirit Airlines service counter that will allow you to print your boarding pass for free. But, if you don’t do either of the things I just mentioned and you choose to go to the ticket/service counter to check in and get your boarding pass, you will be charged 10$. Don’t do that.

Bonus tip: Bring your own snacks. Spirit does not offer free inflight snacks or beverages. But with base fares so low, that doesn’t deter me.

  1. Yes thank you for this. Ive had the same experiences recently with people saying they hate flying spirit because of all of the myths you talked about. I did misunderstand and paid for a checked bag, but not again will I do that! I’m still a little skeptical but I will put my best foot forward in hoping that my experience is a pleasant one when I take flight next week. 🙂

  2. Bad experience and horrible customer service. Read their Facebook posts and google reviews before you EVER consider using this airline.
